The Art of Don Dahlke
Portland, Oregon was home to Don Dahlke for
many years as he studied architecture and became his own best
teacher of art. Travel to the Caribbean soon lured him
to live there with his wife and daughters. On St. Kits
and St. Croix he was fascinated by the culture of the tropics
and admired the colonial architecture. The evening
shadows became a fascination, puzzling in their surrealistic
reality. Don's way of using the brilliance of color and
the light taunts our other senses to feel the sun's warmth,
taste the salty air, smell the ocean as we see and hear it
crashing.
The appeal is immediate, whether referencing
an experience or dreaming of one that calls. As the
invitation to paradise is too seductive to resist, so too is
the draw to escape. Be it to sand and sea or the
invitation to enter a door, peer through a window. The
viewer feels compelled to step toward something new,
symbolically, perhaps leaving something behind.
Change. Fantasy.
There is simplicity in life and art.
Sun. Casual. Relaxed. Sit back and visit
paradise. Take a moment to linger and see for yourself. |
